O pięknie muzyki:
W ciągu 2 lat, od grudnia 2001 roku, kanadyjski kompozytor Howard Shore zdołał nieźle "nabroić" w światku muzyki filmowej, stając się z raczej niszowego twórcy jednym z najsłynniejszych twórców ostatniego okresu w światowej muzyce filmowej. Oczywiście niczego z tego nie osiągnąłby gdyby nie niezwykle inspirujące filmy Petera Jacksona z trylogii The Lord of the Rings, które śmiało można dziś uznać za jedne z najwybitniejszych utworów i to nie tylko w dziedzinie kina fantasy. Po oszałamiającym sukcesie obu poprzednich części Howard Shore kończy swe wielkie dzieło, na pewno ukoronowanie jego już długiej kariery, które z pewnością zapewni mu miejsce w całej historii muzyki filmowej.
Niestety, wysłuchując muzyki z Powrotu króla towarzyszą nam często długie sekwencje underscore'u, który dodatkowo w przypadku Shore i "brzmienia" LOTR-a jest rozpisany na "długie nuty". Często między tymi sekwencjami nic szczególnego się nie dzieje, a musimy sobie postawić sprawę jasno, iż Shore jednak przez poprzednie wydania narobił nam sporego apetytu... Ta bolączka "trawi" głównie środkową część płyty. Jest to o tyle dziwne, gdyż w filmie aż roi się od akcji, chyba że wina leży w złym doborze materiału na album. A sama muzyka akcji jest nieciekawa, głównie prowadzona przez zastęp wybijających rytm kotłów czy agresywnego tematu orków. W porównaniu do poprzednich score'ów muzyka ta zawiera również więcej mrocznych fragmentów, jak zwykle u Shore'a sugestywnie zorkiestrowanych. Doskonałym przykładem jest tutaj silnie dysonująca muzyka w utworze "Shelob's Lair", chyba "najcięższy" w słuchaniu utwór trylogii.
Jeżeli chodzi o bazę tematyczną, to Shore w większości "odgrzewa" wszystkie znane z wcześniejszych score'ów tematy, aranżowane na różne instrumentarium, z udziałem pełnej orkiestry bądź w solowych wykonaniach. Powraca temat nr 1 trylogii, temat Drużyny, temat Pierścienia (tym razem w bardziej klasycznym wykonaniu), motywy miłości Aragorna i Arweny z "Breath of Life" z Dwóch Wież, na bardzo krótko fenomenalny motyw z "Forth Eorlingas" z tego samego soundtracka jak również nowość – klimatyczny motyw fantasy z "Many Meetings" z Drużyny, w bardziej dętym wydaniu. Brakuje natomiast jakiegoś muzycznego akompaniamentu dla Golluma czy znakomitych wykonań tematu jeźdźców Rohanu (co prawda jest, ale jest tak jakoś nieinspirująco zagrany, że szybko umyka uwadze).
Shore za to trzyma nadal wybitny poziom wykorzystania pełnego chóru The London Voices oraz solowych wokalistów nadających cięższym utworom momentów szczerego piękna oraz uniesienia. Wokale Renée Fleming w kluczowych momentach score'u nadają mu wielkiej klasy, również niczego złego nie można powiedzieć o Benie del Maestro. Ciekawie za to wypadają wokalne próby dwóch aktorów, którzy odśpiewują partie wokalne w filmie. Trzeba przyznać, że Billy Boyd ma świetny głos i jego fragment w "The Steward of Gondor" jest poruszający, natomiast wykonanie Viggo Mortnsena jest równie jakże interesujące... Chór jest jak zawsze wielki i masywny, gdy wchodzi naprawdę czuć, że jesteśmy świadkami jakichś gigantycznych wydarzeń - szczególnie "The Black Gate Opens". Małym arcydziełem jest punkt kulminacyjny muzyki i filmu, rewelacyjny "The End of All Things", w którym na przemian mamy wejścia epickiego chóru oraz zwalniające, wyciszające i emocjonalne solówki Renée Fleming.
Najlepszym momentem soundtracku jest chyba jednak naprawdę fenomenalny utwór "The White Tree" z jednej z najbardziej zapadających scen z całej trylogii, zapalania pochodni sygnałowych. Jest tak głównie za sprawą muzyki twórcy, który absolutnie wyzwala w tym utworze ducha golden-age'u, wielkiej przygody i rozmachu a temat buduje się i buduje i buduje bez końca... Coś wspaniałego. Shore również przedstawia tutaj heroiczny i nobliwy temat Gondoru, który jest równie świetny i śmiało może rywalizować z tematem Drużyny. Warto wspomnieć jeszcze o pięknych solówkach fletowych Sir James'a Galwaya i piosence "Into the West" wykonywanej przez Annie Lennox. Ciężko się domyślać tylko jak ta piosenka zasłużyła na Oscara. Niby dość ładna piosenka, dodatkowo z lekkim gitarowym tłem, ale nie jest ani tak dobra jak "May it Be" a tym bardziej emocjonalne "Gollum's Song". Widać nazwisko Annie Lennox i cały szał związany z finałową częścią trylogii wydatnie w tym pomogły. Piosenka ta wykorzystuje jeszcze jeden z nielicznych, nowych tematów, motyw "Szarej przystani" ale jej statyczna forma nie pozwala się nią delektować jak poprzedniczki.
Muzyka z Powrotu króla to nadal muzyka na niedosięgalnym przez innych kompozytorów, bardzo wysokim poziomie, co do tego się nie łudźmy. Jest to ponownie wielka partytura odzwierciedlająca w większości klimat Tolkiena i jako autonomiczna kompozycja jest naprawdę zdumiewającym przedsięwzięciem tak od strony rozmachu jaki i muzycznej jakości, muzyką którą Władca Pierścieni musi mieć. Jednak niejako jej "ciężarem" są niechybne porównania do poprzednich, znakomitych części, które wydają się cokolwiek lepszymi kompozycjami. Płyta ma znakomity początek i świetną końcówkę, natomiast nieco mało interesujący środek. Szkoda, że Shore nie zdecydował się na wprowadzanie odważniej wszystkich nowych tematów a poszedł inną drogą - przypominał na przemian motywy w z przeszłych części, co również odbija się na słuchaniu tego albumu jako mniej świeżego dzieła – wszystko to już niejako zostało "przerobione" i przesłuchane (tym bardziej że jest to już trzecia część!). Niewątpliwie Howard Shore zapisze się swoimi kompozycjami złotymi zgłoskami w historii muzyki filmowej. Muzyka ta chyba jako pierwsza w trylogii lepiej wypada w kinie niż na płycie i nagroda Oscara (ponownie) dla Shore'a wydaje się w pewnym sensie słuszna.
